Caldarium - Tepidarium - Sanarium - Laconium - Relaxarium. Hot air therapy rooms. In ancient Rome, the warmest room in a thermal bath was called Caldarium.
Today, some spas have both saunas (dry saunawet sauna, infrared sauna, sauna aroma, salt sauna), as well as several rooms for hot air therapy, and clients can move from room to room, with the temperature gradually increasing from one room to another.
These rooms are Caldarium, Tepidarium, Sanarium, Laconium, Relaxarium.
Caldarium
Caldarium is a room in the middle of which there is a pool of hot water - the water temperature does not exceed 50 degrees. There are warm ceramic benches on the side, as well as a source of water for cooling. You stay in the Caldarium for about 20 minutes, followed by a break in the relaxarium. The Caldarium can be considered a pore spa, as the steam opens the pores and makes the skin glow as it cleanses it of toxins. The heat in the room stimulates blood circulation, which strengthens the immune system and metabolism. The warm, moist air is also great for relieving respiratory problems such as asthma.
The room before the Caldarium is known as the Tepidarium. Here you can relax between two therapies. The room is clad in mosaic, marble and ceramics. The air in the room does not exceed human body temperature and the room is heated by underfloor heating. The purpose of this room is to prepare the body for therapy or to normalize body temperature after a therapy.
Sanarium
Sanarium is a kind of sauna, a combination of a sauna and a steam room, combining the benefits of both rooms in a moderate form. The temperature in Sanarium is lower than in a sauna, ranging between 50 and 60 degrees. The humidity in the Sanarium is not as high as in a steam room. The humidity in the Sanarium oscillates around 20%. As the air in the Sanarium is less aggressive than in the sauna, the possibility of dehydration is much lower.
Laconium
Laconium is a room that allows the body to be gradually warmed up. In Laconium the temperature is lower than in a Finnish sauna. The humidity in the room is around 20%, which makes the temperature perceived as lower than in a steam room (hammam), set at the same temperature (about 40 degrees Celsius). The role of this room is to purify and detoxify the body. The Laconium is a very luxurious room with ceramic benches, lights and music by relaxationsometimes even with flavors. It is advisable to stay in this room for 15-20 minutes. Laconium is equipped with a shower where you can refresh your body.
Relaxarium
Relaxarium is the most pleasant room in a spa and is found in almost all larger spas (in terms of number of rooms), even those that do not have other rooms: laconium, caldarium, tepidarium, etc. Relaxarium is a beautifully decorated room, whose purpose is, as the name suggests, to relax the body. Clients are invited to this room before or after a therapy, to make waiting more pleasant. Here they can enjoy a warm atmosphere with lights, aromas and relaxing music. The Relaxarium is beautifully decorated and furnished with plants and thermal spa chairs. The latter are ceramic beds or loungers, permanently heated to 37 degrees.
After a stay in a warm air room, it is recommended, in order to increase immunity, regulate circulation and close the pores, to immediately switch to cold air therapy. In a future article we will present: Frigidarium, snow cabin and ice fountain.
