Spa Management Training - some solutions

One of the industry's biggest trials Spa The global lack of qualified managers is mainly due to the fact that it is a very fast growing sector.

How are spas coping with this challenge?

Some promote Spa therapists in management positions. The advantage of this solution is that they fully understand the nature of the Spa service - maximum care for well-being and consumer health, as well as the specific trials of the Spa environment.

The disadvantage is that, most of the time, they have no business education or experience. And a spa is run like a business. Another category of spa managers are those recruited by some large hotels in other areas of the hospitality industry. In general, they, although they have a good understanding of business principles, are not familiar with the spa environment. Spa Managers who come from "food and beverage" or "front of house" have no idea what Spa is all about.

The realities of today's Spa industry require the need for Spa Managers who have both business training and Spa specific skills and knowledge.

Below is a short selection of those who offer Spa management education:

Alpine Center in Greece- partner of the renowned Swiss Business School for Hotel& Tourism Management, offers the Spa Management Certificate - 1 year and Spa Management Diploma - 2 years, both in "face to face" and also online.

- Carlton Institute in UKoffers ½- 3 days training modules on various management topics.

- Raison D'Etre- is a consultancy firm that has expanded its work into the field of education, with two annual programs, one for candidates from Sweden and another for international applicants.

- Irvine- The University of California, offering online Spa management education since 2008.

- The University of Derby - Brixton has an online version in Spa management since 2003. The certificates obtained are equivalent to a bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management or a master's degree in wellness.

- ILIS- is an Innovations and Learning in Spa Management project, a unique collaboration between universities in Finland, UK, Poland, Spain and Austria, aiming to raise standards in the European wellness industry. The courses are available both online through the Turku University of Applied Sciences program and face to face. Each course module is worth 10 points in ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).

- There are employers who take a stand in staff training, and many who do not.  Banyan Tree already has an in-house training program, Hyatt announces that it will soon introduce one. Hilton has recently launched a Spa Management training program for its Asia-Pacific properties.

- ESPA- world leader in Spa consulting, has been offering Spa Management Essentials and Spa Management Advanced training for 5 years.

- In some regions where the spa and wellness industry has aroused the interest of even governments, such as Morocco yes Nicaragua, authorities recognize the need to invest in Spa Management and are taking action. The King of Morocco wants to transform the country into a wellness destination.
