10 trends in the global wellness industry, according to GWS

The Global Wellness Summit has released its Wellness Trends 2025 report, highlighting 10 directions that will influence the $6.3 trillion global wellness industry in the coming year.

Released on January 28 at a media event in New York, the 130-page report outlines the emerging directions that GWS predicts will have the greatest impact on wellness businesses and consumers globally.

The publication looks at a wide range of trends, from the revival of analogue wellness practices and the global sauna revolution, to the wellness industry's innovative approaches to tackling the water crisis and the rapid rise of the Middle East as a global wellness hub.

Each trend is illustrated by contributions from leading journalists, analysts and wellness specialists.

Beth McGroarty, GWS vice president of research and forecasting, summarized these trends highlighting continued divergence in the wellness market.

"In last year's report, we noted that the wellness market is increasingly becoming a place of conflicting mindsets. A much more high-tech, medicalized, hyper-optimized and expensive market has emerged (termed 'hardcare').

At the same time, we have noticed a growing desire for simpler, low-tech, less self-optimization-obsessed and more accessible wellness, where social and emotional well-being matter most ('softcare'). We anticipated that these polarities would become more pronounced, and our 2025 report reflects exactly this phenomenon."

Top 10 wellness trends for 2025

  1. Wellness Analog

"The year 2025 will mark a cultural shift towards 'unplugging' as the world reacts against the overwhelming effects of the digital age. From 'calm tech' solutions and device-free experiences to 'dumb homes' designed for privacy and simplicity, this movement will evolve from a trendy nostalgia to a social movement for focus, quiet, and human connection." (Beth McGroarty)

  1. Sauna Reinvented

"Saunas are undergoing a renaissance, transforming into dynamic community spaces with global appeal. From spectacular waterfront saunas in Norway and forest saunas in Canada to immersive art installations in Japan, these spaces are becoming destinations for social interaction.

The Aufguss movement - a sauna ritual combining spectacle, heat and aromatherapy - is attracting a young and dynamic audience, redefining the relaxation experience globally." (Jane Kitchen, Spa Business editor)

  1. The Paradox of Supplements

The $178 billion supplement industry is at a crossroads. Premium products are becoming status symbols, promoted with fancy packaging and celebrity endorsements, but the industry faces lax regulation and exaggerated claims that have diminished consumer confidence.

Innovations in the field, such as personalized formulas, DNA-based supplements and artificial intelligence diagnostics, are redefining the industry and rebuilding credibility. (Jessica Smith, wellness and beauty expert, Rennie Creative)

  1. Wellness for Teens

Amid the rise in mental health problems among teenagers, the wellness industry is expanding to serve this segment. Family and cross-generational wellness programs are emerging as solutions to anxiety, depression and addictions in an increasingly technologized and demanding world.

Mindful breathing apps, teen retreats and wellness education in schools offer a holistic framework for stress management. (Kate O'Brien, journalist and author)

  1. Wellness and the Water Crisis

As water scarcity becomes a global issue, the wellness industry is reducing its environmental footprint by adopting sustainable practices. Iconic retreats like Rancho La Puerta are implementing water-saving initiatives, from drought-resistant landscaping to water recycling systems.

This trend highlights the wellness sector's key role in promoting sustainability (Jane Kitchen).

  1. Augmented Biology

Advances in genetic engineering and health technology are opening up new possibilities for human performance. Brain-computer interfaces, wearable robotics and genetic modification through CRISPR are no longer just scientific concepts, but are becoming consumer-friendly tools.

The trend explores the rise of the 'superhuman', where health and physical capabilities are boosted to once-impossible levels (Olivia Houghton, LS:N Global).

  1. Longevity Redefines Work

The aging population is changing labor market dynamics, and the 65+ segment is one of the fastest growing. Employers are adopting wellness initiatives to support longer and healthier careers, including workplace health programs and flexible policies.

This chapter shows how companies can capitalize on the experience of older employees while maintaining an inclusive and productive work environment (David Stewart, Ageist and Super Age).

  1. Wellness against Addiction

The wellness industry is taking an innovative approach to addiction, removing the stigma associated with it. From harm reduction strategies to recovery programs that combine traditional therapy with yoga, mindfulness and nutrition, the approach is becoming more holistic.

Meanwhile, amid the reclassification of alcohol as a Class 1 carcinogen, wellness brands are exploring alcohol-free lifestyles and alternative social rituals (Claire McCormack, Beauty Independent).

  1. Wellness by Rail and Sea

Slow and immersive tourism is fueling wellness experiences on trains and cruise ships, offering an alternative to fast-paced and stressful tourism. From Dior Spa carriages on Belmond luxury trains to wellness retreats at sea, this trend underlines the impact of wellness in tourism (Jane Wilson).

  1. Wellness ambitions of the Middle East

The Middle East is becoming a global leader in wellness, combining cultural heritage with innovation and sustainability. National strategies and massive investments in preventive health, sport and wellness infrastructure are transforming the region into a top destination.

From futuristic health solutions in Saudi Arabia's Neom project to religious gatherings with a focus on wellness, the region is becoming a global wellbeing hub. (Thomas Morris, Finn Partners)
