Thalassotherapy - seawater healing. What is Thalassotherapy?Invented in 1865 by a doctoral student at Bonnardiere Arcachon, the term "thalassotherapy" designates the combined use, under medical supervision, of the benefits of the marine environment: marine climate, seawater, mud, algae, sands, waves. This term comes from two Greek words meaning thalasso - sea and therapy - care.

Benefits of thalassotherapy

The virtues of seawater have been appreciated by many civilizations. In Egypt, the pharaohs organized processions to the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. In ancient Greece, Hippocrates recommended the external and internal use of seawater to treat joint ailments, bone pain and swelling. Plato admitted to treating himself in Egypt with seawater.
First of all, the waves and sand in the water have the effect of hydromassage. Through thalassotherapy, elements contained in seawater are absorbed into the skin, such as sodium and iodine, which have a regenerating effect. Algae in the water are rich in vitamins, iron and proteins, nourishing the skin. Algae also have antibiotic and antioxidant properties.
Based on the benefits of seawater, real health centers dedicated to this therapy have been developed around the world. It can also be practiced during the cold season, in enclosed spaces with pools filled with seawater. The baths are made with warm water at a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius.

Thalassotherapy - seawater healing. Conditions treated by thalassotherapy

Thalassotherapy is indicated in the treatment of chronic rheumatism, osteoporosis and spinal pathologies. It is also beneficial for peripheral circulation, postoperative pain, trauma, respiratory pathologies, psoriasis, problems related to menopause or puberty. Thalassotherapy is also recommended for those suffering from insomnia or chronic fatigue. Marine elements also sculpt the silhouette and fight cellulite.

Contraindications of thalassotherapy

At the cutaneous level, thalassotherapy is contraindicated for open, suppurative wounds and for dermatologic frame disorders. Other effects for which thalassotherapy is not recommended are arterial disorders, progressive heart disease, progressive hypertension, non-consolidated fractures, cirrhosis, hepatitis, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, renal failure, nephritis, progressive malignant tumor diseases, severe depression and severe mental illness. Thalassotherapy is forbidden for pregnant women who are more than 6 months pregnant.
