Herculane - 20 thermal mineral springs for your well-being - - The Herculane area is truly a place rich in thermal water resources. With its rivers of hot springs and its location in one of the most picturesque valleys of the Carpathian Mountains, Herculane is one of the most valuable thermal spas in the world. In fact, the springs at Băile Herculane are comparable in value to those at Vichy and Mont Dore in France.
The whole area is dotted with: mineral waters chlorous, bicarbonated, slightly sulphurous thermal spring waters with a mineralization between 0.5-2.6 g/l and temperature between 38.5-53.5°C; chlorous, bicarbonated, calcareous thermal spring waters with a mineralization between 0.6-3.5 g/l and temperature between 46-56°C and chlorous, brominated, iodized and sulphurous thermal spring waters, temperature up to 62°C and mineralization between 3.87-7.93 g/l.
The more than 20 natural thermal mineral springs are scattered along the Cerna, almost 4 km long. One characteristic of the area's mineral waters? They contain high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide (up to 60 mg/l). Also, in the last two decades, the area has undergone some improvements and several hydrogeological boreholes have been drilled, resulting in significant thermal water flows (over 4000 m3 in 24 hours).
Artesian spring Maria (today Neptun) - 54°C; Elizabeth (today Diana) - 55°C; Hebe - 41°C; Ileana (today Apollo 1) - 46°C; St. Joseph - 54°C; Neptun 3 - 54°C; Hercules - 67°C; Hygeea - 48°C.
The current reserve of thermal mineral water available in the resort is more than 4.000 cubic meters in 24 h, which offers, due to its physico-chemical properties, various possibilities of spa cure. According to their chemical composition, the waters of the thermal mineral springs in the perimeter of Herculane Baths are grouped as follows:
...characterized by a total mineralization of 500-2600 mg/l, in which the predominant elements are sodium chloride, sulphates and calcium bicarbonates. In addition, these springs are also highly radioactive, reaching up to 22mµc/1. Moreover, among the most radioactive in the country, but with a low H2S content of 4-5 mg/l.
Hercules I and Hygeea springs can be included in this group, which are characterized by the absence of H2S, higher content of chlorides, calcium and magnesium bicarbonates and the presence of calcium and magnesium sulphates in the proportion of up to 80 mg/l.
This type includes Apollo I, Apollo II and Hebe springs, mainly characterized by the presence of H2S in the proportion of 15-44 mg/l and an increased content of sodium and potassium chlorides, which reach up to 150 mg/l. In these springs, the presence of calcium and magnesium sulphants is noticeable, reaching up to 110 mg/l and bromine and iodine in quantities of 1-3 mg/l. Total mineralization reaches 2800mg/l.
This group includes the springs Diana I-V, Neptun I-IV, Venera, Traian, Decebal and boreholes 4578 nand 4579. The main characteristic of these waters is the presence of H2S in increased proportions, from 30mg/l in Diana spring to 60mg/l in Traian spring. Interesting in the latter spring is the fact that methane gas eruptions appear at the surface and the hydrogen sulfide content varies within very wide limits (from 30-60mg/l). The sodium and potassium chloride content is also very high, ranging from 3500-4780mg/l. It is important to know that the analysis reports show that the springs of Baile Herculane also contain very small amounts of cobalt, copper, zinc, nickel, nickel, titanium, vanadium and molybdenum.
DIANA III (near the Rotunda): natural mineral water, sulphurous, chloride, soda, sodic, calcic, hyperthermal, hypotonic. This spring is indicated for: conditions requiring choleresis cures (biliary dyskinesias, chronic cholecystitis, postoperative sequelae of the biliary tract); conditions requiring diuresis cures (urinary infections, postoperative sequelae of the urinary tract). Herculane magic water can also be used for external cure in the following conditions: chronic degenerative rheumatism; abarticular rheumatism; post-traumatic musculo-articular sequelae.
NEPTUN III (eye): natural mineral water, sulphurous, chlorinated, calcareous, sodic, hyperthermal, hypotonic, with indications in some ophthalmologic diseases (chronic conjunctivitis, chronic blepharitis) and those mentioned in DIANA III.
FORAJ 511 H: natural mineral water, sulphurous, sulphurous, chlorinated, calcareous, sodic, hyperthermal, hypotonic. FORAJ TRAIAN (at the Red Bridge): natural mineral water, sulphurous, sulphurous, chlorinated, calcareous, sodic, hyperthermal, hypotonic. FORAJ NEPTUN I+IV (near Izvor stomach): natural mineral water, sulphurous, sulphurous, chlorinated, calcareous, sodic, hyperthermal, hypotonic.
All these are indicated for: chronic degenerative rheumatism; abarticular rheumatism; post-traumatic musculo-articular sequelae; peripheral neurological disorders.
APOLLO II SOURCE (behind Grota Haiducilor Restaurant): natural mineral water, sulphurous, sulphurous, chlorinated, calcareous, sodic, hyperthermal, hypotonic.
The resort of Baile Herculane also has thermal mineral waters used for recreation:
FORAJUL CRUCEA GHIZELEI (7 Izvoare Beach): oligomineral, mesothermal water. HERCULES I SOURCE (Roman Hotel): natural mineral water, chlorinated, calcic, soda.
The most important natural healing factor in the resort are the thermal springs with thermosulphurous and radioactive chloride water. They are used mainly for external and, to an increasing extent, also for internal cures. The main therapeutic element of the most important thermosulphurous mineral waters of Baile Herculane, which gives a special position, a privileged situation to the resort itself, is thermal sulphur. It is of a particularly high quality compared to other thermal and mesothermal sulphurous mineral waters from other resorts in the country and abroad.
The thermal sulphur in the thermal mineral waters of Băile Herculane resort is a soluble sulphur, dissolved in deep thermal waters, with a high penetration and diffusion power in the body during bathing. The effect? As a result of this, after a thermal bath, the amount and concentration of sulfur in the thermal water, the degree of immersion, the duration of immersion and the temperature and volume of the thermal water.
