Forest Country - Baraolt Depression - On your journey through Covasna Land, in the north-western part of the county, you will discover the Baraolt Depression framed by the Perșani Mountains to the west, to the north by the southern part of the Harghita Mountains and to the east by the Baraolt Mountains. The forests on this territory have given the area its name - Forest Land.
This Forest Country is special and unique because of its magnificent natural environment, the many and varied mineral water sources, the rich built heritage and the folk crafts still practiced in the area.
And as we are only a few days away from the official start of summer and vacations are still taking shape, I suggest you put this wonderful place, special for its natural riches, on your list. You'll have the chance to feel the gentle sting of the carbon dioxide bubbles in the mineral water baths you'll discover in the Forest Countryside.
Here too, as well as nature's beauties, there are a few muzee that are worth discovering on your journey through the land. I also have a tip for you: Baraolt Depression Museum houses the mastodon skeleton, which is about four million years old and unique in the world. The diorama "History in miniature - The history of Transylvania from prehistory to World War II"The six-seven thousand miniatures is also a popular attraction that will pique your curiosity.
Continuing your way through the Baraolt Depression, you'll reach the Museum of Transylvanian Life in Kálnoky Castle, built in the 17th century in Micloșoara, a museum that takes you into the world of Transylvanian aristocrats. In the rooms of the hunting lodge you can admire original weapons, reconstructions of period clothes, books read by aristocrats and old musical instruments. The period setting also includes the castle's large park, a small pond and a gazebo, where you can take a break to catch your breath before hitting the road again.
Further, in Zălanului Valley, Préda Barna has created an ethnographic collection typical of the region, which is housed in the local village museum in a mud plastered peasant house with a porch.
Well, you've reached that moment when you also want to find out how talented you are or when you want to choose a souvenir. How do you do that? Simple: visit the craft workshops! And the village Vârghiș is famous for its master wood carvers and furniture painters. The best known is Sütő family, whose history dates back to 1568. Don't miss a visit to the family workshop, where already the sixteenth generation is now producing furniture from the old Saxon households.
From wood we turn to iron, which comes to life in our hands blacksmith Nagy György from Tălișoara. His workshop is a living museum, where, alongside his wrought iron masterpieces, the 'blacksmith's breakfast' is prepared over the same fire. Curious? Another stop can be made in Little Sticks. This is where the Keresztes family's water mill still grinds today. According to the inscription on one of its beams, the mill was built in 1835. The mill's only automatic mechanism is a bell that rings when the hopper has no more wheat to grind.
This road can be completed at Kovács Béla Kovács from Baraolt, who has been making personalized items and harnesses for horses for more than four decades.
