Discover tips and techniques to improve your sleep

Do you almost miss your bed because of how sleepy you are, or do you not know where you left off on the sheep count and sleep is still a long wait? So which category do you fall into: do you fall asleep easily or have trouble falling asleep?

Why is good sleep so important? Sleep is a fundamental element for the functioning of our body and, in particular, for our brain, which during its resting hours, in addition to recharging, gives rise to a large number of very important processes. Sleep keeps the brain functioning and the quality of sleep affects our mental and emotional well-being.

But insufficient or poor quality sleep and insomnia make our quality of life exponentially worse. How? We can wake up in the morning feeling tired, tired, stressed, and all of this affects our efficiency, creativity and general state of health and well-being. Solutions? Of course!

Here are some tips to improve your sleep:

"Sleep disturbances can usually be mild or temporary, which is why we tend to underestimate them, but they are still capable of undermining our quality of life. However, even in the absence of serious illness, it's important to look after the quality of your sleep and try to get a good night's sleep.", points out Dr. Larisa Băloi, balneologist at the Bacolux Afrodita Resort & Spa in Baile Herculane.

Here are some easy tips on how to get a good night's sleep and wake up refreshed:

The importance of a good sleep routine

It sounds trite, but creating a solid bedtime routine can help you get more rest. Try to always have set times for both bedtime and wake-up, without neglecting the weekend. This will allow your body to get used to a specific rhythm that it can maintain over time.

The right atmosphere

To get a good night's sleep, you need to try to create the right atmosphere. In the bedroom, choose a soft light that doesn't disturb the eyes, open the windows and change the air throughout the day, making sure the right temperature is always there. Avoid having your smartphone and laptop around, reduce the light in your room and check the environment: the ideal temperature for a good night's sleep is between 15° and 20°. Last but not least, make sure you have a comfortable mattress. And by the way, only use your bed for sleeping: avoid turning it into an "office" and working on your laptop or watching movies and TV shows in bed.

Spend time outdoors: it will help you sleep better

In fact, we often underestimate the fact that our daily activities can also affect sleep. So exposure to natural daylight during the day helps you sleep better because it stimulates your body to produce the optimal amounts of hormones and neurotransmitters that regulate your biological clock. How about trying to make time every day to take a walk and spend time outdoors? We even have a proposition for you: Herculane Baths!

Yes, the air at Herculane Baths is known for its health benefits, including improved sleep. Walks in the Herculane woods and thermal baths can reduce stress and anxiety, giving an overall feeling of well-being. Why? "The mountain air contains the most negative ions, which is why hiking and walking in the mountains makes us feel so good. The air in this area is strongly ionized and helps to relax, which can contribute to a more restful sleep. At Băile Herculane, located in the nature reserve of the Domogled Cerna Valley National Park, the concentration of negative ions is over 2000 negative ions per cmc. This concentration is usually found at altitudes above 2000 meters, as the resort is located at an altitude of 170 meters above sea levelexplains the balneologist.

Eat well to sleep well

Nutrition can also affect sleep. The first rule is to eat lightly in the evening: over-processed, hard-to-digest foods can make it difficult to fall asleep or disturb your sleep. But the role of good food continues: some nutritional properties can help improve sleep quality. Make sure you take selenium, tryptophan and vitamin C supplements. Also a valuable mineral for the body's wellbeing is magnesium, which can combat sore throats, sleep disturbances and mood swings.

Don't overdo it with the coffee!

You may already know: the real problem isn't drinking coffee, it's drinking too much, especially for prolonged periods. Watch the quantity and avoid too late at night!

Reduce sugars

Tired moments often call for... sugar! That's why it's easier to give in to sweet temptations. Change your habits starting with the way you live your day. For breakfast, focus on a savory breakfast, from salmon croutons to black bread with tomatoes and olives. Change can be difficult, but it's not impossible.

Do breathing exercises

Learn to observe your breathing. We often breathe shallowly, arrhythmically and convulsively. Focusing and paying attention to your breath is the first step to start meditating: visualize the air coming in through your nostrils and imagine sending oxygen to your toes. The effect is calming and has the power to clear the mind.

Watch your sleeping position!

Another element that is often underestimated: sleeping position. While choosing a good mattress is important, sleeping positions can also affect sleep. In general, the most comfortable sleeping position is subjective, but it's important to know that the only one not recommended is on your stomach. The explanation? Sleeping on your stomach is a position that requires you to sleep with your head turned sideways on the pillow, which can cause stiff jaws, numbness and tingling.

Natural remedies or drugs?

Medication can be a solution to sleep better, but only if your sleep problems are really serious and, above all, only and exclusively on prescription. But before contacting a specialist, you can try some natural sleep remedies. There are a number of herbal teas that are perfect for falling asleep and sleeping better: chamomile, valerian, passion flower, nalbia, lime, linden, rosemary, hawthorn. Some natural remedies such as melatonin, lavender and valerian are also very helpful.

Choose the solutions that suit you best and live healthy!
