6 tips for physical and mental detoxification

We live in a time when we are more and more preoccupied with the external, we are always on the run and looking for the newest and trendiest remedies that have a quick effect for all kinds of physical or emotional ailments, forgetting that often the solution is so close to us, in a simple and healthy lifestyle. Before the development of the pharmaceutical industry and the new methods of detoxification, there were a number of ways in which this could take place detox, naturally, free of charge and available at any time.

Here are some of mankind's forgotten cures: 

1. Breathe deeply

Air is an always handy and wonderful medicine, if we know exactly how to use it. The ancient Hindus practiced three-breath breathing:

  • breathe in deeply (minimum 6 seconds),
  • hold the air (6 seconds)
  • Expire long (6 seconds), similarly.

When we practice deep breathing, we activate the vagus nerve, which counteracts the effects of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the "fight or flight" stress reaction, heart rate and blood pressure begin to decrease. Thus, we relax and return to our fundamental state of well-being.

2. Hydrate

Along with air, water is another often overlooked element when it comes to detoxifying. The first impulse when you have chapped lips or dry hands is to apply a layer of lip balm/moisturizer. But the natural step would be to moisturize properly from the inside out.

If we listened to our bodies, we would definitely drink more water every day. It's not just dry skin or mucous membranes that benefit from hydration, but also other health problems such as constipation, muscle cramps, headaches and even anxiety. Water is the universal panacea, from a certain point of view, so reevaluate it and take advantage of it.

3. More green in your life

It's a scientific fact that green landscapes relax you and help you reconnect with your inner self. But this extends to green food, green drinks and in general, a 'green' lifestyle - as natural as possible. They say that when you've got a pair of hiking boots on your feet and a backpack on your back, you don't feel the need for a psychotherapist. So get out in nature as often as you can, even if it's just to the park or for a picnic on green grass. Recharge your batteries and detox from negativity with the help of nature.

4. Get rid of junk

There is now a minimalist trend that says that by getting rid of all the accumulated junk, physical or mental, you can reconnect with yourself and regain clarity and peace of mind. Therefore, clothes, home appliances and generally anything excess, kept with the idea that you might need it someday, should go. 

5. Make room for new relationships

In a similar way to emptying a closet of excess or unworn clothes, it is advisable to clean out your relationships: re-evaluate their quantity and quality and leave only the essentials. Similarly, sort out all contacts in your phone book. Leave the people you talk to at least once a week (except your hairdresser or manicurist). And those who add value and positivity to your life and support you in achieving your goals. Remember that mental detox is as important as physical detox.

6. Find a sport that keeps you loyal

If in your 20s you do sport exclusively for the sake of your body, after 30 exercise is "good for your head". Caught between the stresses of your job and the strings stretched by one or two toddlers, you may find yourself looking with great interest for a way to relax your tense muscles and overworked neural circuits. Exercise is a magic bullet in this respect too.
